Oh the arrogance of tired old media.
Howell Raines, former executive editor of the NY Times, cries in the Washington Post that his old-school journalistic colleagues have not mounted a crusade against Fox News:
Why has our profession, through its general silence — or only spasmodic protest — helped Fox legitimize a style of journalism that is dishonest in its intellectual process, untrustworthy in its conclusions and biased in its gestalt?
Raines then answers his own question:
The standard answer is economics, as represented by the collapse of print newspapers and of audience share at CBS, NBC and ABC.
Raines goes on to reveal his true reasons for anger at Fox: News people there regularly take on the Obama Administration and its plan for health care.
The bottom line here is that many of those “standards” of journalism as defined by the media gatekeepers are no longer being accepted by news consumers as gospel. In fact, they are being rejected by readers and viewers. The result is increased audiences for organizations like Fox and vastly decreased audiences for newspapers and TV networks.
Raines yearns for the good old days of “objectivity,” apparently not even realizing it never much existed and is now dead in the internet age. Readers and viewers don’t want “objectivity” handed to them, they want to make up their own minds. To get there, they now have an opportunity to sift through multiple sources.
As long as old media hands like Raines continue to whine, old media will continue to lose audience and money.
