Critics say he is a warlord mired in corruption. He has survived attempts on his life before, most recently in 2009.
Initial reports suggest Mr Karzai was shot by his bodyguard in his house in Kandahar.

One of Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s brothers has reportedly been shot dead by a bodyguard – with reports the Taliban have claimed responsibility.

An official said Ahmad Wali Karzai was gunned down at his house in Kandahar.
The Taliban is reportedly describing the killing as one of its “biggest achievements”.
Sky News sources say he was shot with an AK-47.
Mr Karzai, who was head of the Kandahar provincial council, had become a political liability for the Karzai government.
But the President repeatedly defended him, denouncing accusations that his brother was involved in criminal activities.
