Ames straw poll results: Bachmann wins narrowly over Paul

Ed: The fun of the Ames straw poll came to an end this afternoon as the ballot count shows that 16,892 votes were cast, and Michele Bachmann (4823) won a narrow victory over Ron Paul (4671) — less than 200 votes difference.  Tim Pawlenty finished in a distant third (2293), followed by Rick Santorum  and then Herman Cain.  Bachmann comes away with a win, but not by much — and since reports had her giving out 6,000 tickets to the event, it’s not exactly a big endorsement.

Rick Perry got 718 write-in votes without showing up at all.

Michele Bachmann wins the Ames Straw Poll

AMES, Iowa — Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann scored a victory in the first major test of the 2012 presidential contest, a win likely to provide her considerable momentum as the race ramps up.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul (Texas) came in a very close second while former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty finished third, a showing that will raise major questions about his ability to remain a viable candidate as the race moves forward.

For Bachmann, the victory at Ames solidifies her as the clear frontrunner in the Iowa caucuses which are set to kick off the presidential balloting process in early February 2012.
