Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call Law enforcement officials emerge from a parking lot in an alley between C Street Northwest and Louisiana Avenue near where officials arrested a man who they say was attempting to attack the Capitol.

The FBI confirmed to Roll Call that agents arrested the individual about 12:30 p.m. near the Capitol campus.

Capitol Police were “intimately involved in the investigation for the duration of the operation” and assisted in today’s arrest, spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said in a statement.

“The arrest was the culmination of a lengthy and extensive operation,” the statement continued. “At no time was the public or Congressional community in any danger.”

An FBI official told Roll Call that the bureau would be issuing a press release later this afternoon containing more information about the incident.

Local reports by Fox News describe the individual in custody as “a man, in his 30s and of Moroccan descent” who has been a target of a lengthy FBI investigation. Fox News reported that the suspect believed the undercover FBI agents assisting him were al-Qaida operatives.

Speaker John Boehner’s office confirmed that the Ohio Republican, who left the Capitol around noon today, was briefed on the investigation leading up to the arrest.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) office would not comment on whether her staff received a similar briefing.
