Santorum drops out of GOP race

Rick_SantorumGETTYSBURG, PA (RNN) – In a town well-known as the backdrop of the Civil War’s most famous battle, GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has announced that he has dropped out of the race to the White House.

The announcement came from a source through CNN just before a rally scheduled in Gettysburg, PA Tuesday. Instead the event became a news conference to announce that he would suspend his campaign with his daughter’s health in mind.

“I want to thank all of you across the country for what you have given,” he told supporters.

It was to be his first campaign event after his 3-year-old daughter Bella was released from the hospital Monday night. Bella suffers from a rare congenital condition called Trisomy 18. The disease causes victims to develop an extra chromosome which could lead to developmental problems and a number of ongoing health issues.

Rumors have swirled recently that Santorum might step out of the race as front-runner and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney continues to pick up speed. The speculation was fueled by his daughter’s health issues, which have forced him to cancel campaign events twice before.

Rick Santorum is suspending his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination on Tuesday, according to two people with knowledge of his plans.
Mr. Santorum is due to make the announcement at a stop in his home state of Pennsylvania after a weekend in which he tended to his three-year-old daughter, Bella, who had been hospitalized with pneumonia.
The decision abruptly ends his quest for the Republican presidential nomination after weeks in which he has struggled to compete with Mitt Romney’s well-financed, highly-organized campaign apparatus.
