Pyongyang, December 12 (KCNA) — The second version of satellite Kwangmyongsong-3 successfully lifted off from the Sohae Space Center in Cholsan County, North Phyongan Province by carrier rocket Unha-3 on Wednesday.  The satellite entered its preset orbit.

South Korea Confirms

SEOUL, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) — North Korea announced Wednesday its long-range rocket launch was a success, saying what it claims is a scientific satellite has entered orbit.

“The second version of satellite Kwangmyongsong-3 successfully lifted off from the Sohae Space Center by carrier rocket Unha-3 on Wednesday,” the official Korean Central News Agency said. “The satellite entered its preset orbit.”

North Korea launched the three-stage rocket at 9:51 a.m., with its first stage falling in the Yellow Sea, and what appears to be its second stage landing in waters near the Philippines, according to South Korean officials.

Govt: Interceptor not activated

The Japanese government says the missile test-fired by North Korea appears to have passed over Okinawa Prefecture at about 10:01 AM on Wednesday.

It said its PAC-3 missile defense system was not activated.

It also said the missile appears to have fallen into the Pacific Ocean about 300 kilometers east of the Philippines at about 10:05 AM Japan time.

The government added that what appears to be part of the missile is likely to have fallen into the Yellow Sea about 200 kilometers west of the Korean Peninsula at about 9:58 AM.
