Plan B Ruling Disregards Serious Health Concerns – Read Drug Insert

If this were any other drug for any other issue, the left would be outraged that children could get access with out a prescription,  But when the issue is women’s health  (In this case children health)  normal precautionary protocol goes right out the window.

The Obama administration has been against offering this drug to children over the counter, In 2011, Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius overruled the FDA and prevented access to the Drug by children of all ages over the country.

Following the Press release, please review the drug warning information included with Plan B (levonorgestrel)

Family Research Council:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Anna Higgins, J.D., director of the Center for Human Dignity at the Family Research Council, expressed serious concerns regarding a federal judge’s order today that the “morning-after” pill be available to girls of all ages without a prescription.

sebelius-plan-b-640U.S. District Judge Edward Korman in Brooklyn, New York ordered the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make the potent drug available.

Higgins made the following statement regarding the judge’s order:

“This ruling places the health of young girls at risk. Making Plan B available for girls under the age of 17 without a prescription flies in the face of medical information and sound judgment. I am very troubled that the court has not fully taken into account the concerns expressed by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and many public health advocates that there is not enough data on the health effects of Plan B on young girls.

“According to the new numbers released by the Centers for Disease Control, there were 19,700,000 new STIs reported in 2008 – the last year for which numbers are available. Based on the CDC’s estimates, that brings the total number of STIs in the U.S. to just over 110 million. Most of the new cases crop up in young men and women aged 15-25. Making Plan B available over-the-counter for any age will put many of these young girls at further risk because it circumvents necessary medical screening for sexually active girls.

“There is a real danger that Plan B may be given to young girls, under coercion or without their consent. The involvement of parents and medical professionals act as a safeguard for these young girls. However, today’s ruling removes these commonsense protections,” concluded Higgins.

Concerned Women for America Responds to Federal Judge’s Ruling on Plan B

Nance: “Plan B is 40 times stronger than regular birth control pills. It makes no sense that kids need parental permission to take aspirin at school but they’re free to take and buy Plan B.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A federal judge has ruled that Plan B, commonly known as the “morning after pill,” be available over the counter for all ages. Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America (CWA), responds:

“Even HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius saw the dangers of this logic. Since when have we placed politics over the health and well-being of our kids? This harmful ruling should be appealed, and we are confident it will be overturned.

“The morning-after pill contains 40 times the dosage of Levonorgestrel, the same drug used in other forms of birth control. Yes, 40 times the dose. Our young girls do not need to be part of this ‘social experiment’ on their bodies in the name of politics. It makes no sense that kids need parental permission to take aspirin at school but they’re free to take and buy Plan B. We call on the FDA to appeal the ruling and we are confident it will be overturned.”

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Director and Senior Fellow of CWA’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, commented:

“Once again, those who yell the loudest about caring about the nation’s children and youth are using our kids in a special interest experiment. Plan B, popularly called the “morning-after pill” is a much-higher-dosage version of the regular birth control pill (which used to require a doctor’s prescription and continued doctor’s supervision). It is irresponsible to advocate over-the-counter use of these high-potency drugs, which would make them available to anyone – including those predators who exploit young girls.

“This is a political decision, made by those who stand to profit financially from an action that puts ideology ahead of the nation’s girls and young women. Where is the scientific data and solid reasoning behind a decision that endangers minors?

“In the U.S., out-of-wedlock pregnancies are driven today by the twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings, not teens. As usual, the reproductive rights activists are ignoring both research and reality in order to mainstream their ideology. Sadly, some of our children and young girls will suffer the consequences of this irresponsible decision.”
