He “perpetrated thrice-cursed acts of treachery in betrayal of such profound trust and warmest paternal love shown by the party and the leader for him”.

SEOUL, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) — After purging the powerful uncle of leader Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s state media continued its campaign Thursday to rally public support for the communist leadership.

“Let’s safeguard revolutionary leadership with our lives,” the North’s main newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, said in a front-page article, referring to Kim.

The newspaper called Kim, reportedly aged 30, a “great parent” as it encouraged North Koreans to swear loyalty to him. The new title was commonly used for the country’s two late leaders, Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il.

The move comes days after the ruling Workers’ Party headed by Kim removed the uncle, Jang Song-thaek, from all posts for a litany of crimes including factionalism, drug addiction and even womanizing. Jang had long been considered the North’s No. 2 man and Kim’s regent.

The newspaper condemned Jang as an enemy of revolution and politically ambitious. The party has accused Jang and his followers of committing counter-revolutionary acts such as disobeying Kim’s orders. It has not elaborated on the nature of their reported disobedience.

The latest propaganda campaign appears to be aimed at consolidating the monolithic leadership of Kim, who took over the country in 2011 after his father, long-time leader Kim Jong-il, died suddenly of a heart attack.

The purge of Jang and his followers is expected to result in an injection of young blood into senior positions in the isolated country, according to experts.

But it remains to be seen how Kim will fill possible vacant positions of the party and the Cabinet after the purge of his uncle.
