The top official for veterans health care has resigned amid a firestorm over long appointment waits, treatment delays and falsified records at VA hospitals.
Veterans Secretary Eric Shinseki says he has accepted the resignation of Robert Petzel, undersecretary for health care at the VA. It comes the day after both men were grilled by the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs.

Timeline: The road to the VA scandal
Mr. Shinseki testified to Congress Thursday that he would not fire any of the department’s senior leadership until a report from the inspector general, expected to be finished in August, was completed.
At the hearing, Sen. Mark Begich, Alaska Democrat, put pressure on Mr. Shinseki to get rid of those who had been found untrustworthy through fraudulent statements or documents.
“Sometimes you’ve got to have some heads roll to get the system to shape up,” he said.
Dr. Petzel testified before Congress last month that he had found no sign of the alleged list in the early stages of the investigation.
“To date, we found no evidence of a secret list and we have found no patients who have died because they’ve been on a wait list,” he said at a Senate Veterans Affairs Committee hearing on April 30. “If the allegations are true, they’re absolutely unacceptable.”
Now its time for Veterans Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign as well.

However, the departure of Dr. Robert Petzel, the VA’s undersecretary for health, almost immediately created a new controversy: VA Secretary Eric Shinseki said Petzel resigned, but congressional critics said he had announced his 2014 retirement in September. (Source USA Today)
